Mary's Oath: Mary was sent by her parents to the Temple in Jerusalem to serve God since childhood, and she made a vow to remain chaste for life.
The Problem of Marriage Age**: When Mary reached the age of 14, which was the age stipulated by Jewish law for marriage, her high priest (the person presiding over the wedding in the painting) was faced with a dilemma: he had to abide by the law while respecting her vow of purity in serving God.
The Solution of the Divine Prophesy**: The high priest prayed to God for guidance. God told him to gather all the eligible men from the Davidic family (descendants of King David) and have each of them bring a branch to the Temple. God would reveal through a miracle who he had chosen as Mary's husband.
Joseph's Miracle**: Many suitors gathered at the Temple, including a carpenter named Joseph. He was older and a widower. When the high priest collected all the branches, a miracle occurred: **only Joseph's branch had a flower at the top, and even a white dove landed on it** (in Christianity, white doves often represent the Holy Spirit). This clearly indicated that Joseph was God's choice.
The Wedding Ceremony**: Therefore, the high priest betrothed Mary to Joseph. Although Joseph initially declined humbly because of his age, he eventually followed God's will and married Mary (the wedding scene depicted in the painting). After marriage, they remained chaste until Mary was inspired by the Holy Spirit and became pregnant, giving birth to Jesus.
